CIPD L&D Show 2017: Top picks Part 2

We continue our coverage of the CIPD L&D show 2017 this week with Part 2 of our recommendations blog. Today we share our top picks from the free learning programme, which is a series of short updates and interactive sessions from L&D experts, exhibitors and the CIPD. Taking place at different venues around the main exhibition floor, you can slot these in around the main speaker sessions to maximise your conference experience.

Day 1 - 10th May

Practical Insights from Behavioural and Brain Science for Your Business, Shane O’Mara (Trinity College, Dublin)

We mentioned this in our conference programme recommendations, but we’re also convinced that good cognitive science can inspire more effective learning and performance change. Shane O’Mara is Professor of Experimental Brain Research at Trinity College Dublin, so this session should be free from neurobabble and high on quality, evidence-backed recommendations.

Google It: The Secret Online Lives of UK Managers, Owen Ferguson

Owen Ferguson, our very own newly minted MD, shares the findings of Google It - the latest publication from our manager-focused research programme. Published in conjunction with ComRes, and based on data gathered from 500 UK managers, this fascinating presentation will share insight into the specific role the internet and social media networks play in the lives of today's managers, as well as managers' online preferences and habits.

Trends in Learning - What Does the Future Hold for L&D (The Open University)

L&D is never short of a trend or two - so this session looks like a good one to check out. Taking a look at the latest trends in learning, we’re interested to see whether there is anything new or innovative on the horizon. More importantly, we’re looking forward to hearing how these trends might impact our organisations and what L&D can do to stay ahead of the game.

Day 2 - 11th May

Achieving behaviour change – a nudge in the right direction (Acteon)

The concept of applying ‘nudge’ theory to digital learning interventions is one that we’re interested in and are experimenting with. This session will provide some insight into how others are making use of behavioural science findings to inform their design and implementation.

CIPD and Towards Maturity Research Update: The New Learning Organisation

The CIPD join forces with research supremos Towards Maturity to deliver a briefing on the very latest L&D-focused research. This session is a must for L&D practitioners looking to learn how to keep their functions future-focused. We’re exciting to hear more about the new breed of learning organisations and how they are shaking up the L&D profession for the better.

How to Make Your Digital Learning More Engaging (The Open University)

The learning landscape is becoming increasingly digital. The modern learner wants a learning experience that is easily accessible, interactive and available 24/7. This session will share new ideas and strategies to help L&D functions increase engagement with, and completion of, their online learning initiatives, and drive a employee-led learning culture at the same time.

Grill The Guru

We have no idea what this session is actually about, and what’s more - it’s potentially barbarous! However, the title is intriguing enough to stick around to the end of the second day to see if it’s as much fun as it sounds.
